The Various Treatments for Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation is the abnormal coloration of the skin, which can be very embarrassing for the person. It can either be hyper pigmentation or hypo pigmentation. In the former condition, the melanin production in the skin cells increases leading to darkening of the skin or patches of dark shades that can mar the perfection of the skin. Hypopigmentation or vitiligo is a condition where melanin production becomes less than normal, causing light patches on the skin. Both conditions require proper medical treatment.

There are many causes for skin pigmentation. Some of the causes are:

Injury: There are some cases in which a physical injury can lead to inflammation of the skin to result in skin pigmentation.

Exposure to Heat: If the skin is exposed to more heat that its tolerance level, then it could result in pigmentation.

Exposure to UV Rays: This is perhaps one of the most common reasons for skin darkening. The harmful UV rays can affect the melanocytes in the skin and cause hyper pigmentation.

Emotional Conditions: Sometimes extreme emotional stress and pressure can show its effects on the skin. The stress can affect the production of melanin in the skin cells to result in pigmentation.

Is there no treatment for pigmentation? No, there are plenty of advanced methods for treatment of pigmentation on face. There are some home remedies you can follow to treat skin pigmentation. You can make use of commonly found things in your kitchen to treat minor problems. Lemon, yoghurt, potato, turmeric powder, cucumber, sandal powder are some of household items you can use to reduce dark patches.

But if the condition is serious, these home remedies may not be effective. At such times you should go for professional treatment for pigmentation. Skin pigmentation treatment followed by most hospitals is:

Chemical Peel: The top layer of the skin is exfoliated using chemicals such as Alpha-hydroxy acid. If the condition is a little more severe, then Glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is used. This chemical penetrates to the middle layer of the skin. If the skin is extremely pigmented, then Tricholoracetic acid or phenol is used for treatment.

Dermabrasion: Conditions such as scars, crow’s feet, acne scars, wrinkles, sun lesions and more are treated using dermabrasion technique. In this technique, a diamond wheel or wire brush is used to remove the top layer of the skin to reveal a cleaner lower skin layer.

Laser Treatment: This treatment for skin pigmentation on face can perhaps give you the most flawless skin, but it has to be done by an expert so that the side effects are reduced. Erbium or carbon di oxide is used to remove the marks, wrinkles and blemishes on the skin. You may have to take a course of antibiotics along with the skin treatment.
